Medication For Yeast Infection Treatment: What is Available
Yeast infections are very common among women. In fact, very few of us will breeze through life without experiencing candida at least once. A yeast infection is caused by overgrowth of candida albicans in the vagina. This is often present in the vagina in small amounts, but can sometimes multiply and the cause discomfort. Fortunately, there is a lot of medication for yeast infection treatment.
If you have a yeast infection you will soon know it. The intense itching and sometimes burning experienced with a yeast infection is extremely irritating and the only way to soothe it is with a medication. Usually yeast infections are accompanied by a thick white discharge that smells like yeast. Very strong cases of candida can even make going to the bathroom or sex painful.
Although you can pass the yeast infection onto your partner, it is not considered an STD. The yeast infection is caused by a fungus called candida albicans. Overgrowth of this fungus can be caused by wearing tight synthetic clothing, deodorants, creams or soaps that alter the sensitive PH balance in the vagina, your period, antibiotics, pregnancy, weakened immune system or the contraceptive pill.
There are many types of medication for yeast infection treatment that are available for purchase at a pharmacy. It is not usually necessary to visit the doctor or to have a prescription for this medication. However, it is recommended that you do visit your doctor if you are having recurring yeast infections as it could be a symptom of another health problem or could be indicative of an STD.
There are three types of medication for yeast infection: tablets, pessaries and creams. Pessaries are dissolvable tablets that are inserted into the vagina.
Clotrimazole 2% has been a very popular medication for yeast infection treatment for many years. This ingredient is available as a cream with applicators or a pessary. The cream comes as a 1 day, 3 day or 6 day treatment and the pessary as a 1 day or 3 day treatment. The ingredient is marketed under various brand names around the world.
The difference between the cream and the pessary is that the cream is very soothing and the pessary is long lasting. There are now brands of yeast infection medication that have products with both a cream and pessary included. Other creams you might be able to use include miconazole, nystatin and mycostatin. These ingredients can be great alternatives to clotrimazole products if you find that clotrimazole has not worked for you.
There is now an oral tablet that is taken once only as a medication for yeast infection treatment. Fluconazole is the drug name of the medication. It is taken orally once and kills candida that is causing the itching and discomfort. Some women prefer this treatment because they do not want to use messy creams.
Candida is extremely common among women, but it is easily cured with medication for yeast infection treatment. It is important that you take the medication exactly as explained by the pharmacist to relieve your symptoms as fast as possible. You should also treat your partner with an appropriate cream recommended by the pharmacist to avoid having him contract the yeast infection and then reinfect you.
